Le Pavillon
Differdange x Esch European Capital of Culture 2022 (LU)
In mid-2021, the municipality of Differdange commissioned La Bonneterie to design a concept for a summer pavilion to be installed in front of the Lommelsaft buildings. This pavilion, designed to be dismantled, aims to host the public for various workshops during the Esch 2022 period.
The pavilion is notable for its triangular arch, reaching over 6 meters in height, and a sliding door that allows nearly the entire structure to open up. The assembly takes inspiration from metal structures typical of the local industry, while all the wood used is locally sourced. Additionally, the structure features modular, easily movable ballast, meeting the functional requirements of the project.
Architect Lukas Hamilcaro designed the structure’s plans, taking these technical elements into account. Meanwhile, scenographer Marta Pasquetti designed the pavilion’s lighting and actively participated in its construction. She drew inspiration from the red hues of iron oxide-laden slag heaps found in southern Luxembourg, incorporating this color into her approach. Additionally, she worked to visually lighten the structure by using raking lights, creating an airy and dynamic effect.
This pavilion goes beyond its utilitarian purpose; it also embodies a dialogue between architecture, light, and the surrounding landscape, becoming a space for visitors to meet and engage.
