Transformation of a Street into a pedestrian Space

Location: Namur (BE)

The ASBL Coquelicot commissioned La Bonneterie to design and implement this innovative project. The core idea is relatively simple: to block off a street and transform it into a pedestrian space, making it accessible to neighborhood residents.

However, bringing this concept to life requires a series of interventions, or work phases, aimed at occupying the space and identifying the real needs of the inhabitants. Another key goal is to bring the community together around the project.

The first intervention took place in October 2021, allowing for the creation of a space dedicated to “le p’tit kawa”—a weekly coffee gathering for neighborhood residents. This event encouraged social interaction and strengthened the sense of community.

In May 2022, a second intervention was established to create meeting areas for residents and to design a distinctive street pattern on the ground. These initiatives aim to foster a true place for social exchange and connection while redefining the use of public space for everyone’s benefit.
